The Sony Ericsson Z550i is also a clamshell like its competitor the 6131. It is a GSM Tri-band phone while Nokia's 6131 is a GSM Quad-band phone. The Z550i is smaller and thus lighter weighing just 93 grams with dimensions 87.5 x 45.4 x 20 mm. The Z550i has a 256K TFT color screen on the inside and a mono-display on the outside. The external mono-display does well displaying the time, name of the contact or number of the incoming call, FM Radio Station, and alerts (message, missed call, reminders, etc.) The contrast of the inner screen is good and looks very pleasant to the eyes. The screen is smaller compared to the 6131, that's because of the comparatively small dimensions of the clamshell.

In the past, the Z500 series handsets have been about one notch above Sony Ericsson's basic clamshells, and we assume that the Z550i has a similar market positioning. Still, it's pretty well specified - the Z550i has a 1.9" (48mm) 176x220 pixel display, 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and expandable memory on Memory Stick Micro (M2) cards. There's also an FM radio, multimedia player, web browser, email client and RSS news reader.

The front panel houses a module of a 1.3 Mpix CMOS camera, which has almost the same specifications as other company’s entry-level cameras. Speaking about external controls, we can mention only the volume rocker key on the right side – the reason for the volume button being the only dedicate key on the casing is the fact that most designs are tuned to enable managing the camera in horizontal mode, while the Z550i doesn’t require such feature. However, having applied such layout once, a manufacturer keeps on sticking with it. The bottom rim holds a standard interface socket - Fast Port.

Battery Life
The Z550i comes with a standard Li-Ion battery. The battery life of the phone is high because of the external mono-display. The internal screen of the phone is also small, which adds to the long battery life. The phone can run for two to three days without charging for average talk periods. The company specifies a talk-time of 5 hours and standby time of 320 hours. The phone does well keeping up with the 5 hours of talk-time.
